East Hawaii Happenings: “Howling Holiday Event benefits Rainbow Friends”
On Sunday, December 15, 2013 dogs of all shapes and sizes took their owners on one and two mile walks to benefit the Rainbow Friend’s Animal Sanctuary. This event was held at the HawaiianParadiseParkCommunity Center on Sunday morning. There was the main event: the walk, as well as, live entertainment provided by the Going Country band, a silent auction, games for dogs, and information from service providers. Everyone was in a festive mood and there were even photos with Santa!
The Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary is a no-kill facility, founded in 2001 by Mary Rose Krijgsman. The sanctuary’s goal is to provide solutions to the island’s problem with dog and cat overpopulation and abandonment. Periodic spay/neuter clinics are held to provide low cost service and raise funds for the sanctuary. Animals are sheltered while volunteers attempt to place them in permanent homes. When adoption is not possible, animals can find their permanent home at the Kurtistown sanctuary. For more information about Rainbow Friends, visit their website at www.rainbowfriends.org.
