My next new MUST GO SEE "Hotspot" on the Big Island is Whittington Beach in the beautiful Ka'u, South Point of the Island. It is also known to locals as Honoap'u Beach Park. It is located off of Highway 11 in between Volcano and Kona. It is spectacular!
If you are here on vacati
on or a resident, it is a great get away from it all area. Turn off your cell phones and enjoy life as it should be without the hustle and bustle. It is truly Old Hawaii.
When you enter, you will see the stunning ocean straight ahead and grassy areas throughout the landscaped park with picnic benches and built in bbq's throughout. To the left, you will see a massive ancient fish pond surronded by over sized trees that provide shade and to the right and old pier. Simply amazing. Great place for family picnics. It also has pavillions with electric outlets, just in case of emergency, showers and clean bathrooms. Good to know when you are with the kids.
You can go for a swim, fish, crabbing or even catch lobster when it is in season. Set up the horseshoe or volleyball net, lots of space to fit everything. It is pretty secluded and quiet with friendly people from here and afar. Very enjoyable peaceful place, lots to do but still relaxing.
December 7th this year, Honoap'u Beach Park will be packed with people, crafts and food booths for its own ho'olaulea or festival. It is the one time of the year where the park is full of Food, Music and Fun. It is a huge celebration and a perfect time to visit if you want some excitement!
Another cool thing is that it is nearby to the famous Punalu'u Beach with an abundance of sea turtles and green sand and black sand beaches. The best Sweet Bread Store on the island "Punalu'u Bakery" is also just down the road. It has a few charming small towns with your basic necessities if need be like gas, groceries and lodging as well. If you get tired, pop a tent and camp out or stay down the road in vacation rentals. It is an experience you will not regret!
