Lower Puna Happenings: Book Signing for "Hali’a Aloha no Kalapana (Fond Memories of Kalapana)"
Maile Waipa Carr and Nalani Kekaula conducted an oral history project, interviewing 15 kupuna (elders) from Kalapana over a three year period. The book was published in 2012, and Maile is promoting the book at local community events. I caught up with her at the SPACE Artist’s and Farmer’s Market in Kalapana Sea View Estates recently.
The oral histories document the era following World War II through the lava flows in the 1980’s that covered much of the beloved, traditional Hawaiian fishing village, the famed Black Sand beach at Kaimu, and the unforgettable Queen’s Bath. The interviews covered a wide range of topics including: Farming, Fishing, Food, Family, Religion, Schools, Music, Medicine, Jobs, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
This is a great resource for visitors or residents interested in learning more about this special corner of Hawaii, its rich cultural heritage, and the people who called this place home.
