Fishing on Maui
The photograph above is a picture of me catching a 56 inch Mahi Mahi (also known as Dorodo) at Maui's Molokini Crater.
Molokini is a crater-shaped vent that took hundreds of years to form in the Haleakala Volcano. It is one of Maui's best snorkeling destinations as well as an Albatross sanctuary. I had decided to go fishing on my way to Molokini when, all of a sudden, this huge fish was on the line! There was no chair to strap myself in, so I fought for about thirty minutes before reeling it in and learning it was so big it would barely fit into a bag the width of the boat.
You can take snorkeling trips and fishing charters out of Maalaea (near Kihei, Kahalui and Wailuku) or out of Lahaina (near Kaanapali and Kapaluu). If you have ever wanted to go fishing, this is a great place to do it. Most fishing charters split up the day's catch with everyone on the boat - so you won't leave emptyhanded. You can also fish from shore if you live here or own a condo. So when you come to Maui, why not enjoy a very popular activity here on the island? Just gather up the family, head to the beach and toss out a line.
