Lower Puna Happenings

For many residents of lower Puna, visiting the SPACE Farmer's Market is a Saturday morning ritual.

The market is located in Kalapana Sea View Estates, near the Puna Beach Palisades and Kehena Beach Estates subdivisions.20130914 121534 resized Venders and customers are drawn from all over Puna, many making the trek down to the ocean side community from mauka areas such as Hawaiian Acres, FernForest, and Volcano. Most of the regulars live in the “Red Road” area from Kaimu/Kalapana to Opihikao, and all the way to Kapoho.

The market is a perfect people watching event as here, it seems, the summer of love never ended! Some folks are barely clad while others are wearing unusual and sometimes fabulous costumes.   Life in Lower Puna has a slower pace, but it’s rarely dull!

The market is a feast for the senses: A variety of freshly prepared foods are available  for purchase including Thai, Russian, Southern Home Cooking, classic breakfast fare,  juices and smoothies, and raw food offerings. After enjoying an “ono” meal in the  covered outdoor dining space, most customers shop for organic, GMO-free, Big Island  grown fruits and vegetables, grass fed Big Island beef, Puna goat cheeses, 100%  Hawaiian honey, Big Island coffee, fresh eggs, home-made jams and jellies, pickles, and  freshly baked breads and pastries. There are also many artisans selling their wares: jewelry, art glass, soaps, clothing, recycled bags/boxes, photography, leather items….the only requirement that all goods be produced on the Big Island. I am also there each week with the current listings of real estate available in the area. A number of innovative service providers are also present: laptop computer clinic, seamstress of20130907 121249 resized 1fering on the spot alterations and repairs, tarot card readings, therapeutic massage, haircuts, and even free juggling lessons!

SPACE (Seaview Performing Arts Center) is part of Belly Acres, a 12 acre property bordering Kalapana Sea View Estates. This center houses a charter school and provides circus training classes for children of all ages. The open air facility is solar powered and sustainable living is an important part of the group’s mission.

The market is held each Saturday from 8am to 12:30pm. The market accepts EBT, making healthy, locally grown food available to all. The market can be found in Kalapana Sea View Estates. Directions from Pahoa: take Hwy 130 to Kalapana, take Hwy 137 toward Kapoho, proceed approx. 5 miles , turn left at Kahilikai (entrance to Kalapana Sea View Estates), left on Mapuana Ave. , left at W. Pohakupele Loop, proceed approx. 3 blocks, left at 12-247 W. Pohakupele Loop into the parking lot for the SPACE Market.  20130907 121839 resized 1
