Ocean Sports: OC1 Season
Now that Regatta season is over, paddlers are getting ready for OC1 season. OC1s are the long, skinny, 21’ canoes adorning the tops of cars and trucks around the island. They have detachable amas that make them outriggers.
Frequently referred to as “one mans”, paddling an OC1 takes some balance and skill. Beginners will frequently tip over but it’s easy to get back on. Similar to a riding bicycle, mastering the OC1 is a skill that stays with you. These boats are fast and maneuverable, offering paddlers great exercise.
OC1 season consists of approximately 10 Saturday races, usually ranging from 3 to 9 miles. These competitions are held all over the island: from Hilo Bayfront to City of Refuge, Waikoloa and Keahou. Most people who race these boats belong to canoe clubs and race 6-man outrigger canoes during the summer. These clubs are for ages 12 to 65+. It’s a great way to get in the ocean, meet new people, reduce stress and live longer, healthier, more enjoyable lives.
See you on the water...
