The Hamakua Coast

Aloha friends. Here are some facts about the Hamakua coast. Hamakua is loosely considered lands north of the Wailuku River in Hilo all the way to Waipio Valley. This district was known by the acient Hawaiians as Moku. The Hamakua district itself starts north of Laupahoehoe and west of Ookala. The dominating geographical feature is the volcanic mountain Mauna Kea. In Hawaiian mythology Mauna Kea was home to Poli"ahu the snow goddess and
the place of many other legends. We love Hamakua for its lush vegetation and streams and waterfalls. More on the Hamakua next time!
