November 5, 2013 Maui Town Meeting
This past Tuesday night, concerned Maui residents attended a town meeting at Kihei Community Center.
The developer of the "Piilani Promenade" project revealed their revamped mixed-use-project on 75-acre parcel mauka of Piilani Highway and east of Kaonoulu Rd, former ranch property in north Kihei. Public opinion seemed a little more positive where originally was proposed two large outlet malls that outraged some community members. The preliminary plans include around 226 housing units, a 2.5 acre park, retail, business and light industrial areas, pedestrian and bicycle pathways and needed infrastructure upgrades. There are still lingering concerns about the increased traffic on Piilani Highway, size of the retail proposed, and water issues. The Kihei community still have many questions and are watching this project carefully as to how it will impact the people of Maui.
