The Orchid Isle's "A Symphony of Orchids"
The Big Island of Hawaii is known as the "Orchid Isle" and each year Hilo celebrates that identity with the Orchid Show hosted by the Hilo Orchid Society. This year's event, themed "A Symphony of Orchids", was held July 31-August 3 in the Edith Kanaka'ole Stadium. Orchid growers from the area showed off their blooms with exhibits and sales booths. The rainy climate with moderate temperatures of the island make this a perfect environment to grow orchids. Throughout the show, informational and educational demonstrations provide useful information on the care and propagation of orchids. Lots of musical performances rounded out the event making it a very pleasant way to spend a lazy, summer afternoon in Hilo. Plan to attend this annual event next year.
