Island Living...Keiki Style: Coconut Island
Coconut Island or Moku Ola is a small island in Hilo Bay. Moku Ola means the “healing island” and it was once the site of an ancient temple dedicated to healing. It was believed that if one was feeling ill, they would be healed by swimming around the island 3 times.
Coconut Island is connected to the main island via a foot bridge. It has tiny sandy beaches, a large grassy field and picnic areas. It also has a concrete tower that is the remnant of an old foot bridge that was destroyed in the 1946 tsunami. Today, it is used by the children of Hilo as a jumping and diving tower.
