East Side Eateries: Restaurant Kenichi

Kenichi 2

Recently opened at 684 Kilauea Avenue, Restaurant Kenichi is treating Hilo residents to a food fad that has already taken over other parts of the islands and the U.S. Mainland: ramen. The most popular of these ramen dishes is the miso ramen. Friends and family talked up a storm about Restaurant Kenichi, so I finally decided that I had to try it for myself.

Boar Hunting: A Hawaiian Tradition

Wild pigs were first brought to the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians hundreds of years ago, and as they have no natural predators except man and dogs, they have flourished. Through the years they have interbred with some domestics and russian boars to create quite a sizable and ferocious game animal.

Big Island Hot Spots: Sunny Kapoho

My next Vacation Hot Spot on the Big Island is Sunny Kapoho.  You have to stay at one of the Vacation Rentals right
on the Beach.  My favorite is a 1 bedroom oceanfront cottage next to the Wai'opae Pond's Sanctuary in Pahoa, Big Island.  It is just a simple cottage, cozy and charming with the view worth Million's.  It comes equipped with water gear, BBQ, full kitchen, and dishware.

Waa Waa Subdivision on the Big Island

Waa Waa is a beautiful rural community in Lower Puna located between Hawaiian Shores Recreational Estates and the corner of Hwy 132 and Hwy 111 (Kapoho). I remember when my wife and I moved there in 1972 and there was only one other home in the area. This is a small community of approximately 228 lots with the majority of them being 3.44 acres.  50 of these lots are located close to the shoreline. Because there is a thin strip of land that runs the length of the shoreline in this subdivision that is owned by the community, these lots are not technically ocean front but for all practical principles they are.

Welcome Home, Andrew: A Story of Hope

Last May, Andrew, my beloved cat of seven years, disappeared from my family's home in Hawaii Kai.  We searched for him for weeks, making daily visits to the Hawaii Humane Society and hoping that his microchip would assist in Andrew's return home. But with every trip to HHS, our faith in his homecoming was weakened by disappointed heartbreak. Until finally we began to accept he might be gone.

Driving on Hawaii's Roads

In Hawaii, directions such as North, South, East, and West are substituted with North Shore, South Shore, Diamond Head (East), Ewa (West), Makai (Ocean), or Mauka (Mountain).  Don't worry about getting totally lost since you'll have the ocean on one side and the mountain on the other. Plus, many drivers now have GPS and Google Maps to guide them along.  An app called Waze gets real time updates on traffic by those participants who are on the road ahead of you.  Be thankful to those motorists who send in reports to notify drivers behind them whether or not the coast is clear.
